Red Cross CPR AED Certification: Characteristics of All Bleeding Types

A Red Cross CPR AED certification teaches first raiders a lot about important concepts. Deadly bleeding is one of those concepts. Our previous post about it focussed on its types and reasons.

This one will focus on the characteristics of all kinds of bleeding. Let’s not waste time and get to the point!

  • Characteristics of Arterial Bleeding:

This is another key thing you are taught as a part of your Red Cross CPR AED certification everywhere.

  • It is highly oxygenated and bright red.

  • The blood flows with a forceful burst with the heartbeat. This is because blood flows with every pulse due to arterial pressure.

  • A lot of blood loss in a short time is uncontrolled arterial bleeding that leads to hypovolemic shock.

  • The blood usually obscures the wound. As a result, the bleeding site is not visible at first. In this situation, a Red Cross CPR certificate holder should always look for bright red blood that pumps out.

  • If not controlled within 2 or 3 minutes, arterial bleeding can be life-threatening.

  • Characteristics of Venous Bleeding:

Education about Venous bleeding is an

  • It is less oxygenated and dark red or maroon.

  • Lower venous pressure pushes blood out at a steady pace.

  • The blood loss pace is not fast. However, if left untreated or uncontrolled, major venous damage or significant blood loss can result in hypovolemic shock.

  • The blood oozes or trickles out instead of spurting out.

  • Bleeding is fast initially. However, bleeding speed reduces as venous pressure reduces.

This is something every CPR certification holder should know about venous bleeding.

  • Characteristics of Capillary Bleeding:

Pinpoint-sized reddish-purple spots on patients’ skin are the first signs of capillary bleeding.  Many clusters appear on the skin. These pinpoints and clusters appear more on the legs, ankles, feet, and mucus membranes. Blood color does not change when bleeding spots are pressed. Capillary bleeding does not spread or increase in size. These are some capillary bleeding characteristics taught during CPR certification to all students.

  • Characteristics of Internal Bleeding:

The loss of blood into the following cavities is one of the major characteristics of internal bleeding:

  • Abdominal cavities (hemoperitoneum)

  • Chest cavity (hemothorax)

  • Bleeding while coughing.

  • Blood vomit.

  • Expanding bruises, dizziness, confusion, sweating, pale skin, retroperitoneal space, and bleeding joints and muscles are also characteristics of internal bleeding.

All CPR certifications teach students about these characteristics of internal bleeding.

  • Characteristics of External Bleeding:

External bleeding is visible outside the body. Active bleeding from the wound, hypovolemic signs like low BP (Blood Pressure), hypovolemic shock like low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat and dizziness, deep wound size, and blood flow amount are some characteristics of external bleeding.

Wait for our next post about it. You will come to learn many more things about it. For example:
